Spittlebug survey

A citizen science survey looking for spittlebugs, there are already 300+ observations of these creatures on ispot. The survey is particularly looking in gardens during the lockdown period

Interesting- thanks. I only managed to find one on stinging nettles. Perhaps it’s a bit early to look for them here in central Scotland? When I googled ‘spittlebugs on nettles’ this YouTube link came up, ‘How to draw a spittlebug on nettles’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzU4YBpEtlk

Even if this is worthy (which I’m not convinced), it’s pointless - cuckoo spit is everywhere, and froghoppers are ubiquitous, even here in a polluted inner city. This sort of survey, a repeat of / continuation from last year, encourages uninformed people to worry about bugs and regard them as a problem.

Yes, I agree. The survey is here
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/spittle2020 It does suggest (by implication) that a photo or ID of the nymph is required. this almost certainly requires a little murder.
It took me 20 minutes afterwards to persuade this one to share another’s spit - can you imagine?
