I recall being spurred to read about Passenger Pigeons after finding the quiz question “who was Martha, who died in Cincinnati Zoo in 1914?”
It is stunning: the numbers involved, and the almost-fanatical extermination campaigns (cf. the American bison). One pictures the hunters involved in a future life: reincarnated as a statue, in a world where Passenger Pigeons are most definitely NOT extinct.

Think I said earlier in the thread that the land in this area was quite low. Came across the readings from a bit of surveying I did there about 10 years ago, the numbers go up and down a bit as they are for a line across the field and ditches as far as I recall but they all had a minus in front of them. Elevations are in metres to nearest couple of cm (not the large number of decimal places shown).

I only hope that turtle doves don’t go the same way.
