Studland Heath in Purbeck has many notable memories for me so this is a personal comment.
I spent quite a few hours over the years listening to ReesCox, the warden there, explain the natural history of the Reserve. He was encyclopaedic in his knowledge. There I saw my first hobby, my first sand lizard and many special plants, of course. I remember being mortified when I sent a Juncus species for id only to realise I shouldn’t be taking plants from a NR.
Rees always told this joke to students “Why couldn’t the viper wipe her nose? Because the adder ‘ad ‘er handkerchief.” ReesCox died last year. I miss him.
