and Blackbird threatened by the virus called Usutu

this sounds like an excuse to chop trees down

they say people can have there say on it which is good but for development to take place they would need to chop trees down and its an ancient forest. we also dont need any more trees chopped down either even if they claim it to be sustainable. one of the reasons people chop down trees is for building and infrastructure and the chopping down trees is one of the things contributing to climate change. it is also a proper forest that has important species that live there aswell

theres this one in the forest of dean aswell

Dengue fever is on the rise in Europe linked to climate change.

the climate change strategy and action plan report

In December 2021, the leading climate change strategy report was taken to Cabinet for the approval of climate strategy draft and the imediate action plan and resource implications

IF that works it might be a help but there is a very big IF as the current systems may well have a severe biodiversity negative impact. Farmers end up growing monocultures of crops like maize on unsuitable areas to the exclusion of most wildlife i.e. the systems might have been a good idea but implementation has had severe negative consequences.

The project is called GreenPrint. southglos.gov.uk has a few web pages, but they don’t seem to have any numbers attached.

I suspect that the biogas generated from the grass cuttings contributes to the gas supply to the “thousands of homes”, but does not constitute that whole of supply. (For example, consider the amount of grass cuttings available over winter.)

Cut and collect is generally good for biodiversity, as reducing the nutrient supply stops grasses outcompeting other vegetation. It is not obvious to me that it increases “carbon storage a verge side”; that presumably depends on how grass root systems compare broadleaf root systems (prairie grasses have deep and extensive root systems, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to British grasses).

what do you mean by the web pages dont seem to have any numbers atached?

I meant that the web pages don’t give any figures for the scale or results of the project. There are a variety of numbers that could be given; the one that is perhaps most directly informative is the amount of biogas produced compared to the average household consumption of gas (with adjustments for any differences in the energy content between natural gas and biogas). The could also mention things such as the number of tonnes of grass harvested, the amount of carbon storage (if any) in the verges, the reduction in fossil fuel emissions due to this substitution, and so on.

Attached to is an idiom which just means contain, include, incorporate - as in the web pages don’t include any numbers indicating the magnitude of the project.

thanks for explaining what you meamt

One of the reasons why these biogas projects can end up being so damaging to the environment and simply greenwash is that they want to make money and to do that most efficiently they want uniform input i.e. maize at exactly right condition (grown on land that may be subject to flooding and so produce loads of pollution to rivers or where food could be produced). when you try to give the biogas producers real organic ‘waste’ they refuse to take it as it might damage their profits as it is not totally uniform and of exactly the right moisture content.
This is where the green economy needs to be tweeked for the planet and humans rather than just short term profits.

When I was a teenager they used to set fire to the straw usually immediately after the harvester had left the field. There used to be a smoky season at harvest time.
They still burn it today after adding a little bit of diesel fuel to a few road going tractor units.
They all have to join a queue at the renewal energy plant for it all to be burned with a formal smoke filter on the exhaust pipe and get a feed in tariff from the power company.
No website on google but there is lots of bad reviews about grumpy crane drivers and queues.

I have a similar thing aswell. except its an energy and waste facuility. people werent happy about it being built cause it blocked the view to the cotswold hills and there was even a protest for it not to be built saying that it would still release co2 oe that they arnt as green as they claim and coincidentally it had to do with burning but it is burning waste. even though people protested against it it still went ahead anyway. I see it when I go past to go to places and wonder weather it is really as green as they say or not obviously the energy and waste facility say it is and the reason why it went ahead is cause of the landfill issue thhe waste is meant to be turned into energy that can be used to power homes to prevent waste going to landfill
