Have a look at this one.
The naming is again confusing. I spotted it because the AI found another name for it. The common name is just the common name and is the same for both Latin names.
I’m going to push the latest UK & Ireland dictionary to the live server soon so some of these issues might disappear.
when? can you say?
In any case plenty will not be fixed. This is the same in the test site…
This is largely an iSpot Browser issue - it needs the choice reducing to one as old Synonyms are of little interest to iSpotters
8 Choices of Buteo - some are rogues in both Global and UK Communities
When? Very soon - I got the last piece of the puzzle (NBN <> GBIF keys lookup list) today. But it will mean iSpot being offline for half a day.
Oh good. the new Dictionary is very like the old but some things have changed.
It would be nice to have BOTH the CoL and NHM Indeces available in the UK&I Community menu.
I can imagine your groan! Forgive me…
I’m having problems importing the updated database so I’m afraid iSpot is continuing to be offline for the moment.
All done - iSpot up and running again.
Please let me know ASAP if you find any issues.
Looks OK. THANKS Chris
I have been off-line all day too
Testing tomorrow!
Yes I think some of the top levels have not linked up, will tell Chris
On previous updates I had checked all those items immediately but this time I had not checked the top level and Dejay was also offline so it got missed. Don’t know if the site will have to go down again to get that bit sorted out or if it can be linked live.
Hi there
Just to highlight here in the Forum: some strange names coming up for fungi! Example: see names and comments at
Nothing is ever as straightforward as you hope. Keep up the good work to get things sorted.
Updating the “root” of the Species Browser and Dictionary is something I always manage to forget. Am fixing this now…
The number of observations reported and the species browser should now be working. Actual names however come from NBN so I can’t be held responsible if those are wrong!
Those names are not strange they are Welsh! Seems that the update script decided to use Welsh for a change. Will see what we can do about that or just leave them, the scientific name should be correct.
Is this normal? (copyright insert)

Saw that myself this morning. No - the style sheet has been cached without the new size setting for that image. If you force-refresh the page, it should change.
Probably a relatively trivial issue but I find it odd that Pica pica is still being shown with black-billed magpie (the American species) some 20 years after the species were ‘split’. Whose taxonomy is being used.
Yes no offence intended to any Welsh folks. That’s clear I hope at the linked observation.
A question about the Global dictionary.
I know Gobal is not a technically correct moniker (because it does not contain some species in the UK for example), but what will the effect be on the ID panel for unregistered posts? I have AGREED to this:
.
But not to this: Common Darter, Crete | Observation | Global | iSpot Nature
.
When the Global dictionary is updated will both, one or neither be be a ‘Validated’ ID as dj calls them? .
