I’ve only skimmed the Red List so there are undoubtedly aspects of it I haven’t understood. Given that expertise is something you accumulate through your life, I don’t think it is worrying that experts are skewed towards the elderly. I am surprised that the most represented age group is those in their 40s. That is younger than I’d have predicted. But I think the Red List of Taxonomists is counting how many are active based on publications rather than assessing their expertise. Maybe academics in their 40s feel more pressure to produce papers than those around retirement age.
