I had error 500 earlier. Now I’m getting errors on adding identifications and agreements (I think that they’re timeouts, but all that I’m being told is that the action has failed), and I’ve noticed a change to the interface. When an observation has more than one image the full size and zoom buttons are only enabled for the first, and you can’t use the arrow keys to move between them. (Previously you could use the arrow keys to move one image back or forwards, but no more, so this seems to have gone from broken to more broken.)
will report to programmers
There was a short window this morning where I managed to add the pending identification and agreements. But the changes tracker is now 500’ing.
Might be an idea to clear cookies etc as programmer working on various issues at present e.g. that issue with the carousels not showing correct items and there is a chance something might have changed which has not carried over (probably not a good explanation)
Clearing the cookies seems to have fixed everything, including the misbehaviour of the observation image carousel. The latter surprises me.
The programmer has fixed the carousels issue this morning.
Thanks to you, miked, & please pass our thanks to the programmer .
NOT actually a reply to anything!
I’m having multiple issues at present and had similar yesterday though to lesser degree. Very long waits for anything to come up, some 500 errors, page of selected (searched on taxon) observations with no images at all, not able to get into the Forum on first try: woe is me.
Other websites and email etc all working normally, internet connection appears okay.
Wonder if it is cloudflare playing up (the service that it between ispot server and the users browser), this is out of our control. We have been trying to make things slightly better in terms of speed but this service sometimes caches the old bits. Might sort itself out once the new code is through the system.
Actually I also had similar issue, everything stopped on ispot but other things worked, got it going by just restarting ispot then worked fine.
I just tried to post an observation and it failed - very frustrating!
Hi.
I feel I should say that what CloudFlare does and doesn’t cache can be precisely controlled.
If no such control is attempted then sure… it probably then looks like “it’s a CloudFlare thing”.
If this weren’t true then their customer base
would consist of people who don’t mind having their websites delivered with a side-order of random. Worse still… allowing all content to be cached can lead to side effects that can legally sink a company/organisation.
It’s a similar situation to suggesting end users should try clearing browser caches or delete cookies etc. These things are predictable, testable and avoidable.
Sure… it may look like it solves a problem, but the root cause remains unaddressed.
“…the first time jaguc”
yes and thanks for the summary.
It is TIME that Admin began to give us almost DAILY UPDATES on the Home Page. NOT as a banner but say replacing the lingering and STALE ‘June review’ or the “iSpot is currently trialling two image recognition technologies” historic item.
Please?
The last few days I’ve been getting 500s intermittently, but more often than not. I suspect that the recent changes to fix the carousels have pushed it over the performance threshold. (iSpot has a history of not degradingly gracefully under load.)
I just happened to spot this - maybe my mistake - but thanks to @dejayM - I’ve been recording what I’ve posted. So this came as a shock - an observation without an ID.

It might have been an error by me - any ideas?
They seem to lead to the very same Observation,.
You have only one Observation without a Likely Banner Crowded, contorted apothecia, Isle of Dogs - 2017 | Observation | UK and Ireland | iSpot Nature
You need to edit and add the Group, it will then validate
.
Lots of users have Observations without ID, not me because I use this to find and modify or delete them
I have a few observations without an ID mainly because I don’t have the knowledge or resources to give them an ID. But if I understand correctly, putting in, for example fungi, as the group should prevent the observation being without an identification?
Update sadly that did not work as this post was labeled as fungi and is still shown as being without an ID.
Update 2: I’ve now suggested an ID.
Yes, comments not being recognised, typed but add comment greyed out and only cancel reply possible! Will do something else for a while and see if I can sort it.
Okay, so I got a comment on but could not paste anything into the comment box. When typing here, I am not seeing the cursor. Pasting: doesn’t seem to work, just tried to paste something here. Weird! Will close everything and start again!
Programmers have an idea what is going on but fix could take a while. For the moment don’t do extended things that might be lost if you are suddenly logged out or similar. e.g. if writing a long reply then do it in word processor and paste in so it is not lost if site throws you out.
